“Love is a fire
It burns everyone
It disfigures everyone
It is the world’s excuse
for being ugly.”
– Leonard Cohen

“No one knows where the night is going and no one knows why the wine is flowing.”
- Leonard Cohen

Vancouver, BC – Leonard Cohen’s powerful and inspirational music and lyrics are the heartbeat for Chelsea Hotel, an illusory world full of enchantment, desire, passion and love running February 8 to March 3 at the Firehall Arts Centre, with 2 for 1 previews February 3 to 7.

Haunted by memories of his tumultuous love life, a Writer checks into New York’s infamous Chelsea Hotel desperate to find the words and inspiration for his next song. Wading through past relationships, he reluctantly comes face to face with the love of the present, a love he wishes he could not just forget, but erase from existence.

Chelsea Hotel is a riveting fusion of music, dance and theatre that takes its audience on an illusionary journey into the hotel room and creative mind of a Writer in search of the right words to cure love’s pain.

The play stars Rachel Aberle, Lauren Bowler, Steve Charles, Benjamin Elliott, Marlene Ginader and Adrian Glynn McMorran as The Writer. Chelsea Hotel is conceived, directed and choreographed by Tracey Power, with musical direction and arrangement by Steve Charles, costume design by Barbara Clayden, set design by Marshall McMahen, lighting design by Ted Roberts, dramaturgy by James MacDonald, artistic direction by Donna Spencer and stage managed by Kelly Barker.

Tracey Power has been involved as an actor and writer for The Firehall for many years, playing the Jessie Award-nominated role of “Little Sally” in Urinetown, The Musical and “The Folksinger” in The Ecstasy of Rita Joe. She also performed her Sterling Award winning self-penned, one woman show, Living Shadows in the 2007 season and wrote the book for the musical Back To You, The Life and Music of Lucille Starr, which received its world premiere with the Firehall in 2009.

Leonard Cohen is one of the most important and influential songwriters of our time; a figure whose body of work achieves greater depths of mystery and meaning as time goes on. His songs have set a virtually unmatched standard in their seriousness and range -sex, spirituality, religion, power – he has relentlessly examined the largest issues in life, always with a full appreciation of how elusive answers can be to the vexing questions he raises.
